Temple Fortune is a place in the London Borough of Barnet to the north of Golders Green. It is principally a shopping district used by residents of the Hampstead Garden Suburb.
Between here and Golders Green, at Hoop Lane are two cemeteries – Golders Green Jewish Cemetery and Golders Green Crematorium. Religious buildings include the Catholic Church of St Edward the Confessor, St. Mary & Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church, and North Western Reform Synagogue (also known as Alyth Shul).
John Rocque’s map of 1754 was the first to identify Temple Fortune, when a single farmhouse stood. Temple Fortune remained isolated until the arrival of the Finchley Road in the late 1820s.
Today the area shares a mixture of fine Grade II Listed double fronted semi-detached houses with immense charm and popular residential blocks of flats like the Green Roofed Pantiles which was designed in 1934 by J B F Cowper set back off Finchley Road and is popular amongst first time buyers.
The closest tube station is situated at Golders Green which is serviced by the Northern Line.
Golders Green bus station is located next to the Tube station, with National Express coaches in and out of London. Local bus routes include the 82 to Victoria, 13 to Aldwych via Oxford Circus, 268 to Finchley Road via Hampstead and 102 to Brent Cross.
Garden Suburb Junior School is situated at the southern end of the London Borough of Barnet on Childs Way.
The school is a three form entry co-educational community junior school for children between the ages of 7-11 years. The school was originally opened in 1913.
Part of the building was rebuilt in 1960 to replace damage caused during 1939-45 War. There is an infant school on the same site and there are strong links between the two schools and has an excellent reputation.
Temple Fortune Parade is home to several shops and restaurants which includes a Costa Coffee shop, a Waitrose and a Marks & Spencer.
The Temple Fortune Club is a private sports club established in 1922, offering bowls, squash and tennis. It is for members only and does not have 'pay andplay' facilities in any section. Temple Fortune Football Club was formed in December 1968 at Princes Park by a group of local youngsters who originally played in parks in the mid-1960s.
The club joined the Maccabi (Southern) Football League in 1976 and were founder members of the Maccabi Masters Football League (veterans) in 1999. The club now plays its home games at the Roger Bannister Sports Centre in Pinner. In 2008 TFFC celebrated its 40th anniversary by holding a commemorative tournament at Princes Park.
